Sciences des utilisateurs et Participation dans la Conception Urbaine
A research project about the integration of scientific data in participatory design.
‘User’ sciences
Our aim is to explore how we can use inputs (insights, research methods and findings) regarding ‘users’, from scientific domains such as cognitive science, spatial cognition, sociology, ethnography and others, to inform participatory design processes.
The project
The project SPACIOUS (Sciences des utilisateurs et Participation dans la Conception Urbaine) is a 3 year research project studying how scientific data about users’ cognition, behaviour, and needs, might enter the participatory design process.
We will develop frameworks, conduct research and participatory workshops, that translate methods and findings from spatial cognition, psychology, transportation and related disciplines, in order to be used in participation and co-design.
Participatory Design
Participatory design and co-design approaches can foster the flow of information from diverse stakeholder groups (e.g., residents) towards the local authorities and designers. Needs, as well as design proposals can be generated that directly reflect the priorities of groups that don’t always have a say in the initial project brief.
The team
Panos Mavros (PI), Stéphane Safin, Marie-Alix Molinié, Françoise Detienne, Michael Baker, Samuel Huron.
The project is funded by the Region Ile de France and hosted at Department of Social end Economic Sciences of Télécom Paris, Institut Polytechnique de Paris.
Case-study site:
The project will focus on the spatial and social relationships of the Plateau de Saclay, a large area ~20km from the centre of Paris, where agricultural lands, residential suburbs meet a large pole of science and R&D.

Hello world, this is SPACIOUS!
We were funded! Our proposal to research how we can better interface ‘user-centred’ design and science methods with participation and co-design methods, or simply Project Spacious, was funded by the Region Île de France and the Chaires SHS (sciences humaines et sociales). The project essentially weaves our joint expertise: a) on the study of human…
